Although permanently shrinking your pores requires laser treatments, it is possible to refine their appearance significantly with the proper skincare. Nurse Erin from Maia Medspa in Tysons Corner shares four helpful tips on how to achieve smoother, more refined pores.
Pores are vital for the skin’s health, yet many people are concerned about their enlarged appearance. While it’s impossible to completely eliminate the look of pores, the good news is that you can make them appear much smaller. ‘By using ingredients that help remove dead skin cells, you can prevent clogging and minimize the look of pores,’ says Nurse Erin.
1. Stay away from harsh exfoliating tools.
Nurse Erin suggests skipping abrasive scrubs and cleansing brushes with rigid bristles, she explains. ‘These can dry out the skin, causing it to flake, which leads to more dead skin cells that clog pores. The irritation from these products can also trigger excess oil production.’ Instead, she recommends a leave-on exfoliant. ‘For healthier pores, look for products with AHAs, such as glycolic or lactic acid, or BHAs like salicylic acid.’ AHAs exfoliate the skin’s surface, improving the appearance of pores, while BHAs go deeper to clean pores thoroughly due to their antibacterial properties. When introducing these acids into your skincare routine, you might feel a mild tingling sensation. Start with a gentler product, like the Sente Exfoliating Cleanser, and limit use to two or three times a week, allowing your skin to adjust. Remember, stronger products aren’t always more effective.”
2. Double cleanse for a deeper clean.
‘Nurse Erin emphasizes that failing to cleanse properly can lead to clogged pores,’ she explains. ‘It’s especially important at night to thoroughly remove makeup, sunscreen, and any excess oils.’ If these build up, they can exacerbate clogged and enlarged pores. Nurse Erin recommends starting with a gentle, water-soluble cleanser, like the IS Clinical Cleansing Complex, that won’t strip the skin of essential oils. ‘Stripping the skin of too much moisture can actually make it produce more oil, and over time, this can damage collagen and elastin, contributing to loss of elasticity and enlarged pores.’ The goal isn’t to leave your skin feeling squeaky clean but to remove all the day’s impurities. A soft washcloth or gentle scrub can help clear away dirt and buildup, allowing your skincare products to penetrate more effectively.”
3. Add IS Clinical Active Peel Pads and retinol for enhanced results.
‘Nurse Erin recommends using IS Clinical Active Peel Pads for visibly reducing pore size,’ she says. These pads are designed to exfoliate the skin, refine texture, and minimize enlarged pores while improving skin tone and boosting radiance. Nurse Erin also suggests incorporating retinol into your routine. ‘Retinol stimulates cell turnover and helps maintain normal pore function.’ Together, the Active Peel Pads and retinol create a powerful combination—while the peel pads exfoliate, retinol promotes deeper skin rejuvenation. If layering, apply the peel pads first, followed by retinol (her favorite is the Retinol+ Emulsion 0.3 from IS Clinical), for the best absorption and effectiveness.”
4. Adjust your daytime routine for smoother, more refined pores.
For a quick solution, pore-filling primers can instantly smooth the surface, blurring the appearance of pores. However, be cautious of base products with too much shimmer or glow, as they can draw attention to larger pores. Sunscreen is also crucial. ‘Sun exposure weakens the skin’s elasticity, causing pores to stretch and leading to a rough, uneven texture,’ says Nurse Erin. Both UVA and UVB rays damage skin cells, affecting pore shape and function. Choose a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and select one that aligns with your skin’s needs. Nurse Erin swears by the Alastin Hydratint Sunscreen, which protects your skin while adding a tinted glow. ‘When it comes to pore care, your skin type plays a key role,’ Nurse Erin adds. ‘For oily or combination skin, opt for lightweight, gel-like formulas. For dry skin, look for richer, more hydrating cream textures.'”
While laser treatments are the gold standard for visibly reducing pore size, combining them with the right skincare routine can make all the difference. By following Nurse Erin’s expert tips—from gentle exfoliation and double cleansing to powerhouse ingredients like retinol and proper sun protection—you’ll be giving your skin the best chance at staying clear, smooth, and refined.
