Rhinoplasty (nose job) is a surgical procedure designed to reshape the nose. It is used for both reconstructive and cosmetic purposes, depending on the circumstances. Rhinoplasty is an individualized procedure that is designed to create a nose that blends with the rest of the facial features – a “perfect nose” is one that is balanced within an individual’s face. A well-performed surgery can change the shape of the nose while preserving ethnic heritage. The goal is to provide more pleasing proportions and avoid an operated on or “fake” appearance. At Maia Plastic Surgery in Tysons Corner, we have performed rhinoplasty surgery on many of our patients with excellent results.
In some cases, rhinoplasty is used to repair damage from an injury, treat a deformity or improve breathing. In other instances, it could correct cosmetic concerns like a bulbous, drooping, upturned or hooked nose – it can also address a dorsal hump. Nose job surgery is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries at our clinic with a high satisfaction rate, as it improves appearance and self-esteem.
Dr. Munique Maia is a fellowship-trained and accomplished plastic surgeon. Open Versus Closed Nose Job Surgery
It is important to understand the differences between open and closed nose job surgery. Open, or external surgery, involves creating a small incision on the piece of skin that sits between the nostrils to allow access inside the nose structure.
While the open approach leaves a very small scar, the advantage of this procedure is that the surgeon has much better access to the interior of the nose, improving the visibility of all the structures during surgery. With the closed or endonasal approach (scarless rhinoplasty), all incisions are made inside the nose, ensuring no visible scars. Dr. Maia offers both options (open and closed rhinoplasty) and will determine which option is best for you.
In either case, the surgery is performed under general anesthesia. For the sake of patient comfort, general anesthesia is usually preferable, although very simple procedures such as nasal tip refinements could be performed under local anesthesia. With general anesthesia, you will sleep through the surgery.
When the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Maia will make incisions to expose the nasal tissue being reshaped. If additional cartilage is needed in revision rhinoplasty (secondary rhinoplasty), it may be removed from the ear or rib during surgery. Rhinoplasty typically takes about two to three hours, but it could be longer, depending on the complexity of the procedure.
Why Choose Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty surgery can treat a variety of medical and cosmetic concerns. People often assume that nasal reshaping is purely cosmetic, but this isn’t always the case. For example, rhinoplasty could help to correct damage from a sporting or automobile accident. People who have trouble breathing due to a deviated septum (or other reasons) may be able to correct the issue with rhinoplasty combined with septoplasty (correction of septal deviation), as well as cosmetic alterations.
Nose job surgery can be an excellent choice for those who are unhappy with their appearance due to a dorsal hump or a bulbous, drooping, upturned or hooked nasal tip. Often, you don’t need a radical change to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing nose. With small adjustments, you can preserve the ethnic heritage and achieve a natural, beautiful nose that is the shape, size, angle and proportion perfect for your face. Dr. Maia utilizes modern techniques that deliver natural and beautiful results.
Are You a Good Candidate for Nose Reshaping?
If you’re unhappy with your nose for any reason, be it medical or cosmetic, you should know that there may be a variety of options to explore. Rhinoplasty surgery is just one option to consider, although it typically delivers the most significant and lasting results. We also offer non-surgical rhinoplasty for temporary nose reshaping.
The good news is, we can utilize modern 3D technology and see how your nose will look after surgery. With our advanced VECTRA® 3-D Imaging, you can view digital simulations that closely approximate the anticipated final results of your surgery. This provides an opportunity to compare different options and choose the outcome that best suits your needs and preferences. Undergoing rhinoplasty is an important decision, and the right tools can help to ensure your ultimate satisfaction.
