Keloid Scar Removal
One of the most frustrating and noticeable types of scars are keloids. Like hypertrophic scars, keloids are raised above the skin and very noticeable, uncomfortable and sometimes painful. However, unlike hypertrophic scars, keloids can continue to grow and expand beyond the borders of the original scar or skin injury. If you have a growing or painful scar, it may be a keloid. Maia Plastic Surgery offers advanced treatments and surgical options for keloid scar removal at our clinic in the Washington, DC, metro area.
What Causes a Keloid Scar?
The cause of keloid scars is not known, but some are at higher risk for these types of scar tissue formations. About 10 to 15% of wounds can produce a keloid scar. The overproduction of collagen can result in a large scar tissue formation, even from a tiny injury like ear piercing. Keloids are more common in ethnic groups with darker skin, but anyone can have a keloid scar form from any type of skin wound.
Treatment for Keloids
The issue with keloid scar growths is that simply removing them is not effective – they tend to grow back even larger than before. Treatments can include surgical removal of excess scar tissue, but it must be combined with other medications and therapies to thwart the scar tissue from reappearing. These treatments may include steroid injections, silicone gel and other therapies that help stop scar tissue production.
Keloids are complicated scars to remove, often requiring the knowledge and experience of a trained plastic surgeon. If you have a keloid you want removed, contact us at Maia Plastic Surgery.
